Queen Amanirenas (Modern day Sudan)

£70.00£90.00

This is a warrior painting of Nubian Queen Amanirenas with her pet elephant, armed with a shield and assegai as if ready for war.    Queen Amanirenas from the Kingdom of Kush which is now modern day Sudan.  c40BC-c 10 BC is also known as the One Eyed Nubian Warrior Queen.  She lost an eye, her husband and her son in battle.  Queen Amanirenas successfully fought against the Roman Empire and brokered a long lasting peace treaty in the face of Roman oppression.  There are some reports that mention war elephants and pet lions that were fed captives.   After the first victories over the Romans, Queen Amanirenas had the head of a statue of Ceasar buried at the entrance of her city.   She is a legendary queen who rallied her nation to stave off the yoke of slavery and oppression

This is an acrylic painting with dramatic clouds in the background, a majestic elephant in the foreground charging in front of the African Queen.   They are surrounded by typical African bush scenery and the Queen’s red cloak inspired by the Maasai traditional dress, provides a stunning backdrop to her South African inspired bead outfit.  The Queen is also holding an assegai spear.

Ready to hang on a 60.9 x 81.2 cm canvas board.
