Queen Monase was one of the heroines of the Zulu monarchy who helped shape the kingdom behind the scenes during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Known for her larger-than-life personality and courage in the face of danger, she was the mother of Prince Cetshwayo, who would later become one of the most famous Zulu kings.

Created using rich textured art techniques that bring depth and dimension to this powerful portrait, this piece captures the regal presence that made Queen Monase one of the most important women in Zulu culture. The layered textures and bold brushstrokes reflect the complexity and strength of her character.

Queen Monase is consistently recognized alongside Queen Nandi as a pivotal figure in royal history. However, detailed information about her specific achievements remains limited, as much of Zulu history was preserved through oral tradition rather than written records. This oral tradition prioritized collective memory and cultural values over individual biographical details, meaning that while her significance and heroic status are well-established, the specifics of her story have not been extensively documented in historical sources.

This powerful portrait captures Queen Monase in profile, her regal bearing emphasized by intricate braided hair adorned with golden accents. The warm, earthy tones of gold and amber create a luminous backdrop, while a majestic lion emerges from the textured background - symbolizing the strength and courage that defined her character. Her traditional arm adornments and the rich, layered textures throughout the piece reflect both her royal status and the enduring legacy of African queens who ruled with quiet power.

This original artwork joins a collection of African artworks celebrating the powerful women who led, influenced, and shaped the continent's rich history. Her legacy represents the profound influence of royal women who wielded political and cultural authority within the Zulu kingdom.

To see more of Jedidah's African queens, visit the Out of Africa collection.

Jedidah enjoys researching queens from African history to find stories that resonate.
