During the seventeenth century, she fiercely defended her kingdoms against Portuguese expansion, using diplomacy, military leadership, and carefully forged alliances to protect her people and preserve their independence. Even after being forced from her homeland, she rebuilt her power in Matamba, creating a thriving kingdom that negotiated with European powers on equal terms.

Jedidah was particularly drawn to the historical tradition of Mbundu body marking, because surviving Mbundu artworks show distinctive scarification patterns. So although the marks in this painting aren't intended to reproduce one specific historical symbol, they are inspired by that broader Angolan visual language.

The lion symbolises the courage, resilience, and quiet authority that defined her reign. Through richly layered textures and warm, earthy tones, this painting celebrates a woman whose legacy continues to inspire generations, reminding us that true strength is not measured by power alone, but by the determination to stand firm in the face of adversity.

Watch the painting process and listen to Jedidah speaking below.

 Your browser does not support the video tag.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0909/2982/4121/files/QueenNzinga_QueenNzhingaofAngolaJedidahChickOnaiiArt_AfricanArtwork_AfricanQueens_Texturedart._2.png?v=1787164274
