Queen Hangbe stands beside a zebra in glowing ochres, burnt siennas and amber, the stripes sculpted so they rise from the canvas. The warm colours and tactile surface draw you close. This textured African queen painting, 100 x 120 cm, would bring warmth and character to the wall above a sofa.

The Story behind Queen Hangbe
Hangbe ruled Dahomey, in present-day Benin, for a short time around 1716 to 1718, after the death of her twin brother, King Akaba. Accounts disagree on whether she ruled as regent or in her own right, and on whether her reign lasted months or years. She was left off the royal king lists, so much of her story survives through oral tradition. Some versions credit her with founding Dahomey's women warriors, though most scholars think this unlikely. Jedidah painted her with a zebra, using palette knife work and layered impasto for the detailed adornment and raised stripes. Her story is a reminder of how easily a woman who held power can be written out of history.
