The Story behind Queen Nzinga

In 1621, Njinga travelled to Luanda to negotiate with the Portuguese on behalf of her brother, the ruler of Ndongo. A popular story says she was offered only a mat while the officials had chairs, so an attendant formed a seat for her. She took power in 1624, fled Portuguese forces two years later, then seized the kingdom of Matamba in 1631 and ruled there until her death in 1663. When the Dutch captured Luanda in 1641, she allied with them. Her story speaks to anyone who has been offered less than they were due and refused to accept it. The marks in the painting draw on Mbundu body marking rather than copying one historic symbol, and the lion is Jedidah's artistic choice.
