The Story behind Queen Ranavalona II
Ranavalona II was Queen of Madagascar from 1868 to 1883. She is mainly remembered for converting the royal court to Christianity, a change influenced by the Protestant missionaries who had taught her as a young woman. It was a decision that altered court life at the highest level, and it is a reminder that a ruler can change a country through conviction as well as conquest. Jedidah paints her with a cheetah cub as part of her Cheetah Queens of Merina series, using the cub to suggest emerging strength, protection and change. The warm golden tones and layered texture keep the mood close and personal. The cheetah is an artistic choice rather than a historical detail.
