Queen Zaria of Zazzau (African Artwork, Textured Art)

Queen Zaria sits calmly beside a white lion, surrounded by warm earth tones, African textiles and deep, raised texture. The pale lion against those rich colours is what stops you in a room. At 100 x 150 cm, this large African queen painting would anchor the wall above a sofa or long cabinet.

The Story behind Queen Zaria

Zaria appears in the history of Zazzau, a Hausa kingdom in what is now northern Nigeria. Tradition names her as a daughter of its ruler Bakwa Turunku and says the city of Zaria, which still stands today, was named after her. Her sister Amina is the more famous warrior. Little is recorded about Zaria herself, and the accounts differ. Jedidah has painted her at rest rather than in battle, seated beside a white lion, and the layered textiles and earth tones are her own response to the story. This is an artistic interpretation rather than a historical portrait. It leaves you thinking about how many women's lives survive only as a name.

See it before you buy. Book a free private video viewing with Jedidah and see the texture, detail and true scale live from the studio. Email info@onaiiart.com or get in touch here to arrange a time.

A small thank-you: this original arrives with a ceramic coaster from Jedidah's homeware range.

Watch Jedidah paint Queen Zaria

In this short video, Jedidah Chick paints Queen Zaria and her white lion, from the lion alone on the canvas to the finished painting, and shares why she brought a white lion into the painting – an animal she grew up in Zimbabwe dreaming of seeing.
