The Story behind Queen Makwena Matlala

Makwena Matlala served as acting chieftainess of the Matlala people in what is now Limpopo, South Africa. She opposed the apartheid government's policies on African land and, in 1950, was ordered banished, becoming the first woman banished by the new apartheid state. She refused to comply and was moved more than once before the order was finally withdrawn in 1966. In 2015 her memorial site in Limpopo was unveiled. Jedidah shows her alongside a lion to reflect a woman who stood firm whatever it cost her. The gold facial markings are Jedidah's artistic interpretation rather than a historical record. Her story shows what it can take to say no to those in power, and it deserves to be better known.

In this short video, Jedidah Chick mixes the gold, builds the raised texture and adds the final details to Queen Makwena Matlala, while sharing the story of the chieftainess who told the apartheid government in 1950, "I will not leave my own house."
