Discover "Hidden Women", a creative Black history activity pack for ages 9–14 combining Queen Nzinga's story with art, geography, research prompts and printable activities.

Black history is part of our shared history.

"Hidden Women" is designed for children of every background, and for boys as well as girls. Through the stories of remarkable Black women, children can discover leadership, courage, creativity, resilience and determination — qualities that aren't limited by race or gender.

Boys benefit from discovering women as leaders, strategists and changemakers just as much as girls do, while children from different backgrounds have the opportunity to encounter people and perspectives they may not always meet in the history they learn.

This isn't a resource just for Black girls. It's an invitation for every child to discover more of our shared history.

What's inside?

This first "Hidden Women" pack introduces children to Queen Nzinga of Ndongo and Matamba through history, art and creative activities.

Inside you'll find:

• An introduction to Queen Nzinga, including her leadership, diplomacy and resistance to Portuguese expansion.
• A look at animals and symbolism in my artwork, and how I use animals to represent different qualities.
• A short behind-the-scenes video with me as I work on a painting inspired by Princess Mkabayi kaJama.
• A Queen Nzinga word search and facts challenge.
• A creative activity with prompts encouraging children to choose a Black woman they admire, think about her qualities and pair her with an animal.
• A Skin-Tone Challenge, encouraging children to experiment with mixing different skin tones.
• A Colour Challenge, inviting children to choose colours for their own queen and think about the feeling they want those colours to create.
• Simple research prompts encouraging children to discover another remarkable Black woman from history.

You'll receive:

Interactive digital pack — designed to be viewed on screen and including the short behind-the-scenes video.

Printable PDF — the activity pack in A4 landscape format, ready to print at home or school.

The printable pages can be used for writing, drawing and colouring. You can also keep the information pages on screen and print only the activity pages if you prefer.

For home printing, use A4 paper in landscape orientation and select Fit to page/Fit to printable area if required by your printer.
