The Story behind Mwana Kupona

Inspired by the life of Mwana Kupona of Pate Island, this underwater painting honours a woman whose 1858 poem remains one of the most important works of female-authored Swahili literature. Written for her daughter in the final days of her life, her words offered guidance on faith, womanhood, and love, leaving behind a legacy that still resonates along the East African coast. In this textured art piece, she is portrayed as a regal ocean presence, representing wisdom passed quietly through generations. Metallic paint, fine glitter spray, and genuine 24 carat gold leaf are layered into the surface, allowing the mermaid art to catch the light softly and reveal a sense of depth, movement, and enduring grace.
