The Story behind Queen YaaAsantewaa

When the British demanded the sacred Golden Stool — a powerful symbol of Asante unity and sovereignty — Yaa Asantewaa stepped forward at a moment when the future of her kingdom was under immense threat. Around 60 years old at the time, she took on the mantle of military leadership and helped organise a resistance that successfully trapped the British Governor of the Gold Coast in the fort at Kumasi for almost three months.

Her story is particularly powerful because of what it says about being underestimated.

People may look at you and think they know who you are. They may make assumptions about what you can do, how far you will go, or what you are capable of. But sometimes those assumptions cloud their judgement.

Yaa Asantewaa reminds us that people can look directly at you and still completely misjudge your strength.
