The Story behind Queen Yaa Asantewaa
In 1900, when the British governor demanded the Golden Stool, the sacred symbol of Asante unity, Yaa Asantewaa, Queen Mother of Ejisu and around 60 years old, led the Asante forces against them. The governor was besieged in the fort at Kumasi, and the British never captured the stool. She was arrested the following year, exiled to the Seychelles, and died there in 1921. Her story says a great deal about being underestimated. People may look at you, assume they know what you can do, and completely misjudge your strength. The lion beside her stands for courage and guardianship, and the message remains relevant: never let someone else's perception of you become the measure of what you are capable of.
