The Story behind Queen Lojiba Simelane
Lojiba Simelane became Queen Regent following the death of King Sobhuza I in 1836, governing during the transition towards the reign of the young Mswati II. Her story is one of leadership, loyalty and political conflict, shaped by a turbulent period in Southern African history.
As an Ndlovukati, Lojiba represented the powerful position traditionally held by the Queen Mother within Eswatini's dual monarchy. Her story also reveals the complexities of royal succession, motherhood and power, particularly when her own son, Prince Sononde, was passed over for the throne.
This portrait celebrates Lojiba not simply as a queen, but as a protector, mother and leader who stood at the centre of a changing kingdom.
