The Story behind Queen Nzinga

Inspired by Queen Nzinga of Ndongo and Matamba (present-day Angola), this cultural portrait painting honours one of Africa's greatest strategists and diplomats. During the seventeenth century, she fiercely defended her kingdoms against Portuguese expansion, using diplomacy, military leadership, and carefully forged alliances to protect her people and preserve their independence. Even after being forced from her homeland, she rebuilt her power in Matamba, creating a thriving kingdom that negotiated with European powers on equal terms.

The lion symbolises the courage, resilience, and quiet authority that defined her reign. Through richly layered textures and warm, earthy tones, this painting celebrates a woman whose legacy continues to inspire generations, reminding us that true strength is not measured by power alone, but by the determination to stand firm in the face of adversity.
