The Story behind Queen Amanikhatashan
Amanikhatashan ruled the Kingdom of Kush from about AD 62 to 85. Her one documented act is a striking one: she sent Kushite cavalry to support Rome during the First Jewish-Roman War, which ran from AD 66 to 73. Beyond that, very little is recorded. Jedidah portrays her against an abstract backdrop, wrapped in fabric given to her by her mother, the kind of cloth that is part of everyday life in Zimbabwe. The painting brings together a queen of ancient Kush and a cloth from Jedidah's own home, with layered materials and a tactile surface giving the portrait depth. When so little survives of a ruler's life, a painting is one way of keeping her name in the room.

A small thank-you: this original arrives with a ceramic coaster from Jedidah's homeware range.
Amanikhatashan, who ruled from about AD 62 to 85, is one of three Kushite queens Jedidah has painted, alongside Amanishakheto and Amantitere. All three are wrapped in cloth her mother gave her – the kind of fabric that is part of everyday life in Zimbabwe – so each painting carries a piece of home.
