This original African queen painting celebrates Queen Tsandzile Ndwandwe, a remarkable historical figure from Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), whose political wisdom and determination helped guide her kingdom through periods of uncertainty.

The Story behind Queen Tsandzile Ndwandwe

Also known as LaZidze, Tsandzile held the title of Ndlovukati, the senior queen of Eswatini, and was the mother of King Mswati II. Following his death in 1868, she served as Queen Regent until 1875, helping to preserve stability at a time when the future of the monarchy was uncertain.

Respected for her authority, judgement and political influence, Tsandzile played an important role in safeguarding the kingdom and guiding its leadership.

Inspired by the San

Jedidah chose to paint Tsandzile through the visual language of the San, sometimes called Bushmen, among the earliest peoples of southern Africa. San communities lived across the land that is now Eswatini long before the Swazi kingdom was formed, and rock paintings linked to them can still be seen there today, at sites such as Nsangwini. Her bare back, minimal dress and beaded adornment draw on San traditions of dress and beadwork, honouring the deep roots of the land she led. This is an artistic interpretation rather than a record of how Tsandzile herself dressed.

Part of Jedidah Chick's Out of Africa collection, this original artwork honours a woman whose leadership reminds us that strength is not always found in the person who wears the crown. Sometimes, it is found in the person who holds everything together when the future is uncertain.

A celebration of wisdom, resilience and the quiet strength of leadership.
